If you’re visiting two or more Asian countries on one trip, a regional Asia eSIM saves buying and installing several plans. For a single country, a country plan is usually cheaper. Airalo’s Asia plan (Asialink) covers 18 countries and started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$11.50 for 3 days (3GB a day, then 1 Mbps), when we checked on 30 October 2026.

Airalo prices checked on Airalo’s own site on 30 October 2026, in US dollars; providers change prices without notice, so confirm before you buy. Airalo’s Asia plan (Asialink) roams onto partner networks in each country; it lists them per country on its site.
Coverage and networks in Asia
Airalo’s Asia plan (Asialink) listed these 18 countries on 30 October 2026: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia (Bali), Japan, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Countries such as Nepal, the Maldives, Brunei, Mongolia and Myanmar were not on that list, so check your full route before you buy. The plan roams onto a partner network in each country rather than using one operator everywhere.
How much data you need for Asia
- Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
- Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.
These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.
eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM
| Option | Set-up | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online, before you fly | Usually data-only; often cheapest for short trips |
| Australian roaming pack | Nothing to install | Keeps your number; usually more per GB |
| Local country SIM | Airport or shop, with ID | Local number; queues and registration |

China on a regional plan
China is on Airalo’s Asia list. Many Google, Meta and other apps are blocked on Chinese local networks; how a travel eSIM handles that depends on how it routes your data, so read our China eSIM guide before relying on a regional plan there.
Asia plan or country plans?
Price it both ways. On 30 October 2026, Airalo’s Asia plan cost US$25 for 10GB over 30 days, while its single-country plans for the same data cost US$19 in Taiwan, US$21 in Cambodia and US$21 in Indonesia. So one country is cheaper on a country plan; two or more countries usually favour the Asia plan because you buy and install once. Japan, Korea or Bali only? Use the country guide: Japan · South Korea · Bali · Thailand · Vietnam.
How to install and when to activate
Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. We haven’t yet hand-checked Saily, Nomad or Ubigi prices for Asia, so they’re not in the table above.
Airalo sells a regional Asia eSIM (18 countries) as well as single-country eSIMs for each of them.

Questions travellers ask
Does an eSIM work in Asia?
Yes. Travel eSIMs for Asia connect to local networks such as partner networks in each country, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
When should I activate my eSIM?
Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.
Do I get a local phone number with an Asia eSIM?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
Is an unlimited Asia eSIM really unlimited?
No. Airalo’s unlimited Asia plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day (checked 30 October 2026). For most trips a fixed-data plan is cheaper. Every provider’s daily cap →
Which countries does an Asia eSIM cover?
It depends on the provider. Airalo’s Asia plan listed 18 countries on 30 October 2026, including Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, India and China, but not Nepal or the Maldives. Check every country on your route.
