For most trips to Switzerland, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Switzerland eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$11.50 for 3 days (3GB a day, then 1 Mbps), when we checked on 30 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in Switzerland
Switzerland’s networks are Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt, and Airalo’s Switzerland eSIM lists all three (5G listed). Coverage is excellent in towns and on most trains, and good on the main mountain lifts and passes, but can drop in deep valleys and tunnels.
How much data you need for Switzerland
- Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
- Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.
These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.
eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM
| Option | Set-up | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online, before you fly | Usually data-only; often cheapest for short trips |
| Australian roaming pack | Nothing to install | Keeps your number; usually more per GB |
| Local Switzerland SIM | Airport or shop, with ID | Local number; queues and registration |

Switzerland and Europe-wide plans
Switzerland is not in the EU, so it falls outside EU roaming rules and isn’t on every Europe eSIM. If you’re combining Switzerland with Italy, France or Germany, check your Europe plan lists Switzerland — Airalo’s Europe plan does (checked 30 October 2026). Every Europe eSIM compared →
How to install and when to activate
Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. Step-by-step activation guide → Comparing providers? Read our Airalo review, Nomad review or every destination compared. We haven’t yet hand-checked Saily, Nomad or Ubigi prices for Switzerland, so they’re not in the table above.

Questions travellers ask
Does an eSIM work in Switzerland?
Yes. Travel eSIMs for Switzerland connect to local networks such as Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
When should I activate my eSIM?
Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.
Do I get a local phone number with a Switzerland eSIM?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
Is an unlimited Switzerland eSIM really unlimited?
No. Airalo’s unlimited Switzerland plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day (checked 30 October 2026). For most trips a fixed-data plan is cheaper. Every provider’s daily cap →
Does a Europe eSIM work in Switzerland?
Only if Switzerland is on the plan’s country list. Switzerland is outside the EU; Airalo’s Europe plan includes it (checked 30 October 2026), but check any other provider’s list before you buy.
