For most trips to Mexico, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Mexico eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$10.50 for 3 days (3GB a day, then 1 Mbps), when we checked on 30 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in Mexico
Mexico’s main networks are Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar. Airalo’s Mexico eSIM lists AT&T (5G) and Movistar (4G). Mexico City, Cancún and the Riviera Maya are well covered; in the Yucatán interior and around cenotes signal can drop out.
How much data you need for Mexico
- Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
- Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.
These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.
eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM
| Option | Set-up | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online, before you fly | Usually data-only; often cheapest for short trips |
| Australian roaming pack | Nothing to install | Keeps your number; usually more per GB |
| Local Mexico SIM | Airport or shop, with ID | Local number; queues and registration |

Plans with minutes and texts
Airalo also sells Mexico plans that bundle calls and SMS with data (for example 5GB with 50 minutes and 50 texts). Useful for booking tours or restaurants by phone. eSIMs with a phone number →
Mexico-only vs a North America plan
If you’re also visiting the USA or Canada, Airalo sells a North America plan that covers the USA, Canada and Mexico on one eSIM. It costs more than a single-country plan, so it’s worth it only if you’re really visiting two or three of them. USA eSIM guide →
How to install and when to activate
Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. We haven’t yet hand-checked Saily, Nomad or Ubigi prices for Mexico, so they’re not in the table above.

Questions travellers ask
Does an eSIM work in Mexico?
Yes. Travel eSIMs for Mexico connect to local networks such as Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
When should I activate my eSIM?
Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.
Do I get a local phone number with a Mexico eSIM?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
Is an unlimited Mexico eSIM really unlimited?
No. Airalo’s unlimited Mexico plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day (checked 30 October 2026). For most trips a fixed-data plan is cheaper. Every provider’s daily cap →
