For most trips to France, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s France eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$11.00 for 3 days (3GB a day, then 1 Mbps), when we checked on 30 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in France
France’s four networks are Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile. Airalo doesn’t name its French partner network on the plan page (it lists 5G). Coverage is strong in Paris and other cities and along the TGV lines; in the Alps, the Pyrenees and rural Provence it can drop out. Orange is switching off its 2G network in 2026, which matters only for very old phones.
How much data you need for France
- Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
- Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.
These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.
eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM
| Option | Set-up | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online, before you fly | Usually data-only; often cheapest for short trips |
| Australian roaming pack | Nothing to install | Keeps your number; usually more per GB |
| Local France SIM | Airport or shop, with ID | Local number; queues and registration |

France-only vs Europe-wide plans
If France is your only stop, a France plan is usually cheapest. Most Australians combine France with Italy, Switzerland, Spain or the UK — then a Europe plan saves buying several eSIMs, but check the UK and Switzerland are on its list. Every Europe eSIM compared →
How to install and when to activate
Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. We haven’t yet hand-checked Saily, Nomad or Ubigi prices for France, so they’re not in the table above.

Questions travellers ask
Does an eSIM work in France?
Yes. Travel eSIMs for France connect to local networks such as Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
When should I activate my eSIM?
Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.
Do I get a local phone number with a France eSIM?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
Is an unlimited France eSIM really unlimited?
No. Airalo’s unlimited France plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day (checked 30 October 2026). For most trips a fixed-data plan is cheaper. Every provider’s daily cap →
