For most trips to Spain, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Digi); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Spain eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$11.00 for 3 days (5GB a day, then 1 Mbps), when we checked on 30 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in Spain
Spain’s main networks are Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Digi. Airalo’s Spain eSIM uses Orange (5G listed). Coverage is strong in Madrid, Barcelona and the coast; in the mountains and rural interior it can be patchy.
How much data you need for Spain
- Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
- Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
- Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.
These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.
eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM
| Option | Set-up | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Online, before you fly | Usually data-only; often cheapest for short trips |
| Australian roaming pack | Nothing to install | Keeps your number; usually more per GB |
| Local Spain SIM | Airport or shop, with ID | Local number; queues and registration |

Spain-only vs Europe-wide plans
If Spain is your only stop, a Spain plan is usually cheapest. Heading on to Portugal, France or Italy? A Europe plan saves several eSIMs. Going to the Canary Islands? Some providers list them separately from mainland Spain, so check the plan’s coverage list. Every Europe eSIM compared →
How to install and when to activate
Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. We haven’t yet hand-checked Saily, Nomad or Ubigi prices for Spain, so they’re not in the table above.

Questions travellers ask
Does an eSIM work in Spain?
Yes. Travel eSIMs for Spain connect to local networks such as Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Digi, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
When should I activate my eSIM?
Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.
Will my phone work with an eSIM?
It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.
Do I get a local phone number with a Spain eSIM?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.
Is an unlimited Spain eSIM really unlimited?
No. Airalo’s unlimited Spain plans slow to 1 Mbps after 5GB a day (checked 30 October 2026). For most trips a fixed-data plan is cheaper. Every provider’s daily cap →
