What a Greece eSIM costs, which local networks it uses, and how to set it up before you leave Australia.

Quick answer

For most trips to Greece, a prepaid travel eSIM is cheaper than international roaming on an Australian plan, and you can install it before you leave. Coverage runs on local networks (Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova); travel eSIMs are usually data-only, so check whether you need a local phone number. Airalo’s Greece eSIM started from US$4.00, with unlimited plans from US$11.50 for 3 days (3GB a day, then 1 Mbps), when we checked on 30 October 2026.

Coverage and networks in Greece

Greece’s networks are Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova. Airalo’s Greece eSIM lists Nova (5G) and Vodafone (4G). Athens and the popular islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Corfu) are well covered; on ferries between islands and on smaller islands signal can drop, so download ferry tickets and maps before you sail.

How much data you need for Greece

  • Light use (maps, messaging, a little browsing): roughly 0.5–1GB a day.
  • Moderate use (social media, photo uploads, rideshare apps): about 1–2GB a day.
  • Heavy use (video calls, streaming, hotspot for a laptop): 3GB a day or more — check fair-use caps and hotspot rules first.

These are general estimates, not measurements. Hotel and café wi-fi can stretch a smaller plan.

eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM

Local Greece SIMAirport or shop, with IDLocal number; queues and registration

Greece-only vs Europe-wide plans

Island-hopping in Greece only? A Greece plan is usually cheapest. Combining it with Italy, Croatia or Turkey? A Europe plan avoids several eSIMs, but check every country (Turkey especially) is on the list. Every Europe eSIM compared → Also see Turkey and Italy.

How to install and when to activate

Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Install the eSIM at home on wi-fi, then switch it on and enable data roaming for that line when you land. We haven’t yet hand-checked Saily, Nomad or Ubigi prices for Greece, so they’re not in the table above.

Questions travellers ask

Does an eSIM work in Greece?

Yes. Travel eSIMs for Greece connect to local networks such as Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.

When should I activate my eSIM?

Install it at home on wi-fi a day or two before you fly and switch it on, with data roaming enabled for that line, when you land. Check whether your plan’s validity starts at installation or first connection.

Will my phone work with an eSIM?

It will if it has an eSIM chip and is carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, look for an EID under Settings > General > About; on Android, look for Add eSIM in SIM settings or dial *#06#.

Do I get a local phone number with a Greece eSIM?

Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so you call and message over apps such as WhatsApp. Some providers sell plans with a number, minutes or texts; check the plan details.

Is an unlimited Greece eSIM really unlimited?

No. Airalo’s unlimited Greece plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3GB a day (checked 30 October 2026). For most trips a fixed-data plan is cheaper. Every provider’s daily cap →
